Kalavasos Tenta
Kalavasos, Larnaka, Cyprus
Kalavasos Tenta is an important archaeological site located in the district of Larnaca. The site was initially excavated in 1947 by Porphyrios Dikaios, on behalf of the Department of Antiquities. In 1976 the American Vasilikos Valley Project resumed the region's investigation under the supervision of Ian Todd, who commenced a multidisciplinary study of the entire river valley. Together with Choirokoitia, Tenta is one of the earliest sites on the island, and its occupation dates back to the 7th millennium BC (Aceramic Neolithic period). The settlement lies in a dominant position to the west of the Vasilikos river valley, and it consists of a compound of circular or double circular buildings made of sun-dried mudbrick and/or stone. The plastered surfaces of the walls were occasionally painted with bright colours, yellow and red, and one of the excavated houses yielded an extraordinary wall painting depicting two human figures with upraised hands. The roof was made of a wooden frame and was generally flat. The site is open to the public, and its characteristic pyramidal roof (financed by the Department of Antiquities and the A.G. Leventis Foundation in 1994-1995) can also be seen from the nearby Nicosia-Limassol highway.

Old Machinery
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
On the main road of Asgata, visitors can find the heavy and industrial wagons, remnants of the mining industry that once made the area remarkably wealthy. The Asgata/Kalavasos mines have been operating since antiquity, but it’s in the 20th century that the mining industry reopened under the direction of the Hellenic Mining Company. The vast majority of the mines operated from the 1930s to the 1960s. Thanks to this intensive activity, Asgata flourished for many decades and tripled in population. The monument hosts 6 wagons and one locomotive.

Kalavasos Ayios Dhimitrios
Kalavasos, Larnaka, Cyprus
Kalavasos Ayios Dhimitrios is located along the Vasilikos Valley, just 200 m south of Kalavasos Tenta. The archaeological site is located on a flat terrain and it has an exceptional commanding view over the natural route that links the East and West of Southern Cyprus. The site was discovered by the American Vasilikos Valley Project in the 1970s, under the direction of Ian A. Todd. From 1979 to 1998 Alison South directed the archaeological excavation of the site, in conjunction with the contruction of the Nicosia-Limassol highway, which runs through the center of the site. Archaeological activities revealed an urban center dated to the Late Bronze Age (ca. 1450-1200 BC). The site covers ca. 11 ha. In the last five years, archaeological excavations have been resumed, increasing our understanding of the Late Bronze Age period on the island.

Apostles Peter and Paul
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
The church dedicated to Apostles Peter and Paul is the largest church of Asgata village. Its construction began in 1865 and ended in 1876. The architectural type consists of a stony single-roomed church covered by simplified groined vaults supported by two harnesses. This architecture type was very common in Cyprus during the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. The church contains several masterpieces by Sophocles Leptourgos, including a wooden iconostasis, the bishop’s throne and the ambo. Throughout the time, the church was frequently renovated, and its floor replaced; in 2018 the beautiful new hagiographies were added. Externally, the church is adorned by beautiful classical carvings; the impressive bell tower, with three arches, was constructed between 1892 and 1900. An inscription is placed above the eastern entrance, indicating that the church was completed in 1876 during the commissioning of Panagis Nicola, while the plot where the church stands had been donated by Hadjichristinou Hadjilouka. Additionally, an inscription above the southern entrance reads that the church’s foundations were laid in 1865 during the commissioning of Constantinos Hadjipyrros. Another important name related to the church is mentioned above the Holy Prothesis, inside the church: Spyros Hadjivoskos, who was the commissioner and main financial contributor. During the Turkish occupation, Hadjivoskos managed to get some money from a Turkish tax collector who had forced him to lead him to Vikla. On the way the tax collector drowned in the river and Hadjivoskos found a treasure inside the horse’s sack. Hadjivoskos then took the money and sponsored the construction of the church.

Monument of Giorgos Chr. Katsaris
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
Giorgos Chr. Katsaris grew up in Asgata and he was employed by the Hellenic Mining Company as a technician. He was an exceptional young man who actively participated in the community’s social life and his village’s football squad. In 1963, upon the commencement of the Turkish mutiny and the bicommuncal unrest, he voluntarily joined and trained with the platoon that was formed to guard the community. In 1964, when the National Guard was established, Giorgos was part of the first class of 1944 that were called to enlist. After short term training his battalion was transferred to the area of Tylliria during the Turkish raid. Some of his fellow fighters testified that he fought bravely and fell on August 8th 1964 struck by a mortar. His fellow fighters buried him in the mountains of Pachyammos Tyllirias. In 1988, Giorgios’ family and the community transferred his remains, placed them in a box and buried them in the cenotaph. The state honoured Giorgios by naming the army camp in Plateies after his name.

Platies mine
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
The mine of Platies is located at the western corner of Asgata/Kalavasos mining area. This deposit is the smallest of the region. It is characterised by an extensive oxidation zone; the presence of a large slag heap indicates that the local deposits were exploited in ancient times. In modern times, the deposit was identified in 1955, and exploited from 1958 to 1964. A total of ca. 55,000 tons of ore has been mined. The ore was mined from the surface, using the glory hole method. According to this method, the ore was drilled in a large shaft, which ended in a 310 m long gallery.

Petra mine
Kalavasos, Larnaka, Cyprus
The mine of Petra is located in the northeastern corner of the Asgata/Kalavasos mining area, and it is the only mine that belongs to the administration of Kalavasos. The area consists in a small and elongated zone of oxidation, and the extensive slag heap indicates that the local deposits were exploited in antiquity. Terracotta figurines and remnants of ancient walls suggest that a small shrine dated to the Hellenistic period was established in connection to the ancient galleries. The exploitation of the local deposit in recent times begun in 1954 and ended in 1964, with a short interruption between 1957 and 1958. The main access to the deposit consisted of a 95 m long incline, with 32° of slope. Modern exploitation activities yielded a total amount of ca. 290,000 tons of ore, but under the altitude of 70 m (which has not been exploited yet), it is estimated that ca. 300,000 tons of ore still remain.

Mavridhia mine
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
The Mavridhia mine operated from 1937 to 1977. The area is formed by several local deposits, generally named A, B, C, D, D’, D”, Ε, and the Mousoulos deposit. Deposits A, B and Mousoulou are tectonically controlled by a significant ruptured zone with a northeastern direction. As noted in geological studies, the upper parts of these deposits consist of solid silica. The exploitation method used from the beginning of modern mining activities consist of Sub-level carving. According to this method, extraction activities take place at successive floors; the lower part of the deposit was detached with the use of explosives, while the upper part precipitated, thus filling the gap that was created. The deposit was then divided into successive horizontal floors (ca. 5 m depth), and each floor was divided into section with transverse arcades. The floors were then connected through vertical or sloping shafts. Five smaller deposits (C, D, D’, D” and E) are located around deposit A, while the Mosoullou deposit is located very close to deposit B. The upper part of the Mosoullou deposit was exploited by the Top-slicing method, achieving a significant percentage of extraction. The Mavridhia mines yielded a remarkable amount of extracted ore; suffice to mention that 1,4600,000 tons of ore were extracted from deposit B and 800,000 tons of ore from deposit A.

Petra
Kalavasos, Larnaka, Cyprus
Extensive evidence of ancient mining activities has been mapped in the area of Petra. The most significant archaeometallurgical consists of a large slag heap that has been extensively damaged by bulldozing in modern periods. Remnants of the large heap are still visible in the area, and indicate that the slags mound was probably very large (ca. 3.6 ha). Recent archaeological activities identified the significant presence of tap-slags, that can be dated to the Hellenistic period at least. During the 1990s, however, the archaeological Vasilikos Valley Project mapped the presence of archaeological materials on the North West of the visible slag heap. The collected artefacts suggest that the area was inhabited since the Archaic period, and extensively exploited during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. Historical carthography dated to the 1930s and 1940s indicate also that the Hellenic Mining Company recorded the presence of ancient adits in the area.

The archaeometallurgical site of Spilios was recorded in the 1990s by the Vasilikos Valley Project, as part of a larger archaeological area (ca. 40 ha) that was intensively inhabited throughout time, from the Ceramic Neolithic to the Medieval period. The slag heap measures ca. 25x25 m, and consist of a shallow mound formed by tap-slags. Archaeological research is in progress but preliminary data suggest that the slags should be dated to the Roman and Late Roman period. The heap is nested in an important archaeological area.

Platies
Asgata, Limassol, Cyprus
Platies consist of an extensive archaeometallurgical area that was continuously exploited for its mineral deposits since antiquity. Archaeological activities have recorded a complex series of slag heaps scattered across a 4 ha area, part of which is currently included into the nearby military basecamp. A well-preserved slag heap is visible ca 100 m SW of the modern open-cast mine, and it consists of a shallow mound formed by plano-convex slags. This type of slag has a rather ancient chronology, and this might indicate that the exploitation of the region commenced well back in time, probably since the Bronze Age onwards.

Mavri Sykia consists of a gentle plateau overlooking a deep gorge, ca. 550 m NE of the modern mine of Platies. Historical cartography issued by the Hellenic Mining Company recorded the extensive presence of ancient slags in the area. Today, scattered slags are visible in the area, and this indicates that the heap has been consistently bulldozed and depleted for construction works. Recent archaeological activities have mapped the presence of two possible ancient adits along the road leading to the Kalavasos dam.

Asgata
Asgáta, Limassol, Cyprus
Asgata is located in the far east end of the Limassol District, approximately 26 km from the city. It is built in the middle of a valley, on an altimeter of 190 m. The village is surrounded by mountains; mount Kokkines and Vouppa with an altimeter of 370 m towards the north, mount Monodentri with an altimeter of 340 m towards the south, mount Teratsotos with an altimeter of 458 m towards the southwest, mount Troulloi with an altimeter of 339 m towards the west and mount Gerakarkos with an altimeter of 361 m towards the east. Asgata has always attracted the interest of nature researchers, both for its mines and its flora, due to the huge variety of wild flowers flourishing in the area. In fact, a particular area in the southwest of the village has been included in the Natura 2000 network, whereas another one has been designated as zone “Z”, meaning an environmental protection zone. Asgata is first mentioned in the Holy Bishopric of Kiti manuscrıpts towards the end of the 18th century (1777), but it is certain that the village had existed long before that, since Stefano Lusignan included a relevant reference in his work “about Cyprus (peri Kyprou)” published in 1573. Apart from that, the existence of small housings and ancient mine tunnels reveal just how ancient the housing was. The most probable version regarding the origins of the name Asgata, which is recorded by Simos Menardos in his work “Toponymical and Folk Studies” supports that it derived from the estates of Askas (the person who used to make wine containers called “askia”). The Greek ending “– ata” is used in several areas of Greece and denotes ownership and thus there are the names Antonata, Voutsinata, Andreata and Askata (meaning the estates of Askas), which was then converted to Asgata as it sounded better. Another version which is recorded by Costas Pyrros without mentioning his sources, claims that long before the Attica dialect replaced the Doric dialect, the compound name Asgata derived from the Doric words “As” and “Gatas” (Greek Meaning = to the farmers), since the area was inhabited by farmers to whom people went in order to buy goods.

Kalavasos
Kalavasos, Larnaka, Cyprus
The village Kalavasos is found at about 40 kilometres south-west of the city of Larnaka. It is built upon the west bank of the Vasilikos river, at an average altitude of 80 meters. Kalavasos is included in the Vasilikos - Pentaschoinos watering project and has benefited from the construction of the Kalavasos dam and the irrigation of significant tracts of land. The dam lies about 5 kilometres northwest of the village and has a capacity of 17,000,000 m³. Two plans for re-allotment of land have been implemented in the village. The Kalavasos region, privileged in many respects, mainly because of the Vasilikos river that secured irrigation and watering and also because of its metal-bearing deposits, was densely populated since ancient times. Today the region is a very significant archaeological site. The Tenta settlement - as well as the other settlements discovered in the region -present a special interest. The valley of the Vasilikos river and the entire surrounding area must have been wooded and verdant in previous eras, a fact that also provided -according to the prevailing interpretation -the name of the village. From the ancient Greek word "vassa", which means woody valley, came the name of the community. The Kalavasos settlement was in existence during the Mediaeval era under the same name and is marked in old maps under the name “Calavaso” and “Calavato”.

Vasa Kellakiou
Vása, Limassol, Cyprus
The village of Vasa Kellakiou is found in the borders of the province of Limassol with the province of Larnaka. The Vasa Kellakiou is built at an altitude of 390 meters. It accepts a medium annual rainfall of around 510 millimetres and in her region are cultivated carobs, olives, almond trees, fruit-bearing trees, citrus fruits and vegetables. The village took the name Vasa because in the old years it was the base for eight other villages that existed in the region around it. Today these other communities are unfortunately not rescued, apart from certain ruins that exist around the village and just imply the existence of other villages. During the years of Venetian domination when the entire island suffered from the raids of the barbarians, under the village there existed a big tunnel that was used by women and children in order to protect themselves. The residents of the village had guardians – messengers in the locality Deisis, at the end of the village. As soon as they saw any barbarians coming, they gave the sign "Cottonseed" via their voice, in order for the women and children to run and hide in the underground tunnel and protect themselves. Unfortunately, today exists only the entry of the tunnel. The village is known as “Vasa Kellakiou” from the name of a neighbouring village in order not to be confused with the other homonym village of Limassol, the Vasa Koilaniou. In the village they are maintained up to today two interesting traditions. The one is reported in the stone of Saint Demetrios and the other in the chapel of Virgin Mary of Vosienas. The first tradition reports that, when the construction of the church of Saint Demetrios began, in the place where the holy altar would have been built there existed a big block of stone that all the residents of the village together could not move. The villagers began to be puzzled for the construction of the church somewhere else, when the other day the block of stone was disappeared on its own. The block of stone was found later in another locality that is today called " The Stone of Saint Demetrios". According to the tradition Saint Demetrios himself moved the stone. The other tradition reports that the chapel of Virgin Mary of Vosienas was built from a villager that his flock was in danger by an illness that was present in the region. When he built the chapel, his animals began to increase in number. Up to today when the animals of the village are ill the villagers ask for help from the Virgin Mary the Vosiena.

Pentakomo
Pentákomo, Larnaka, Cyprus
Pentakomo is situated 20 km from Limassol, at an altitude of 120 m asl. This nice traditional little Cypriot village, with its narrow streets and quaint houses, has become popular in recent years thanks to its proximity to Limassol. According to the British antiquarian G. Jeffery (1918) the meaning of “Pentakomo” could be explained by the fact that it was the fifth village (“pente komi” in Greek) counting from Limassol. Differently, another tradition suggests that the name probably relates to the memory of five ancient settlements that existed there back in time. These five villages were Mesovounia, Halamata, Petromouti, Kremmos and Kalifoudi. During the Arad raids, the inhabitants of the five villages moved to a safer region, close to the mountain slopes, and established a new settlement. French historian Louise de Mas Latrie (1815-1897) noted that the village was part of the royal property during the Frankish Rule until 1570, when the Turks conquered it. Having at its disposal 15 km of coastline, Pentakomo is also a famous tourist attraction; the most important beach is Governor’s Beach (“Akti tou Kiverniti” in Greek) with its white cliffs. From Agios Georgios Alamanos Monastery to Governor’s Beach, the coastline remains generally untouched; it is still possible to see the effects of coastal erosion, which caused interesting geomorphological features, including caves, arches, sea stacks and islands. One of the examples of a natural geological formation known as “Karavopetra” was identified by historians as a memorial site directly related to the Arab raids on the island. The tradition tells that it was the exact place where corsair ships were moored before their crew went pillaging the locals and loot their homes and lands once again.

Drapia
Ora, Larnaka, Cyprus
Drapia is a small, abandoned settlement of the Venetian empire. It carries the name of an administrative region of southern Italy, Drapia, and thus is a “monument of residue”. The village is built on a hill slope, northwest of the village of Kalavasos, and halfway on the road to the abandoned settlement of Parsata. These two small villages have a largely common history: they were built for the same reason, and abandoned for the same reason too. The establishment of mines throughout the Kalavasos region, in fact, attracted workers and miners from different areas of Cyprus, coming from as far as Paphos. The necessity for housing leads to establishing two new villages in the area. Parsata was located on the peak of a hill, dominating the Vasilikos river valley; differently, Drapia was established on its feet. The two villages were connected by a meandric dirt road, as the area was divided by many ravines. Drapia was built out of stone, according to the traditional architecture of the semi-mountainous regions of Cyprus. High surrounding walls, a central door, and two-storey houses without windows on the ground floor. When mining activities ceased in the region of Kalavasos, the miners and their families left the area; some moved to Amiantos, others to Mitsero. The two villages were quickly abandoned, and in their place a few ruined houses remind us of the prosperous economy of the region in the past centuries.

The two villages were quickly abandoned, and in their place a few ruined houses remind us of the prosperous economy of the region in the past centuries.
